The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded EWMI with a contract to implement the Separation of Powers Program (SPP), a five-year program designed to help Serbia move closer to EU accession. EWMI, together with its sub-contractor the Center for International Development at the State University of New York at Albany (SUNY), will work to strengthen the division of power and authority more equably among Serbia’s three branches of government, help the judiciary strengthen its defenses against executive and political influence and control, and help the National Assembly build its capacity to respond to the needs of Serbia’s citizens and conduct oversight of government operations. SPP will facilitate Serbia’s move towards becoming a more democratic state that is fully integrated into European economic and political institutions.
